Integration tools: using ALE and XI

I need to integrate our R/3 4.6C AFS system with a new SAP Retail implementation. Should I use the old standard ALE or the newer XI IDoc adapter so I will be positioned for the future with NetWeaver?

If the two systems are the only ones that need to be coupled, I see no need for XI or any other middleware right now. XI makes sense when you have many systems that exchange data with each other and if there is a nominal amount of workflows across systems. And don't think of ALE as "old". It is a prerequisite for XI to function seamlessly in conjunction with R/3.
