Find application server hostnames on the operating system

Looking for application server hostnames on the operating system? Learn how to locate them with this expert advice from Bert Vanstechelman.

I need all application servers hostnames output -- like sm51 -- available at the command line and not within SAP. I tried to use "gwmon," but it shows all gateway connections and not just application servers. What do you suggest?
The application server hostnames use the following naming convention:

HOSTNAME_SAPSYSTEMNAME_SAPSYSTEM

If you have access to the operating system, you should be able to find the application server hostnames from the SAP instance profiles.

  • The variables SAPSYSTEMNAME and SAPSYSTEM are defined in the instance profile.
  • The HOSTNAME is defined by SAPLOCALHOST or SAPGLOBALHOST which is in the instance or in the start profile. If neither is defined, it is the hostname of the system.
