You can create catalogs in the following ways.

1) Manual product assignment -- mainly used for marketing-oriented catalogs which require editorial controls.
2) Automatic product assignment -- used for functional catalogs that could be copied from the product category of product master with few changes. You would assign product category for every catalog area
3) Manual and automatic product assignment
4) Purchasing catalogs: Mainly used in B2B scenario and for products with purchase sets.
