Q

Choosing which SAP components to upgrade

Expert Bert Vanstechelman explains which upgrades are required when planning an overall SAP environment upgrade.

We are upgrading our production environment to the support package stack (SPS) 13 for our production environment. Is it necessary to upgrade only the software components deployed to the given level?

Are the SAP Kernel upgrades also required?

For some support package stacks, a certain SAP Kernel level is a prerequisite. I would therefore recommend upgrading the SAP kernel before applying support packages. If you prepare the SP stack you need for download, the SWDC application in the SAP Service Marketplace prompts you for your operating system and database. If you select it, SWDC automatically adds the target Kernel contained in the SP stack to your download manager.
