Changing the structure of BAPI table parameters

Can we change the structure being used in BAPI table parameters? The BAPI in question is custom developed, and we released the BAPI and the corresponding BO as well. Then we realized we needed one more field in the structure, so we changed the status back to implemented of the BAPI as well as the Business Object. Still, when we add/delete a field in the structure, we get an error message. What's wrong?

You should be able to add a field at the end of the structure since that is viewed as a compatible change.
