It depends on the magnitude of the disaster and what's available when it happens. Also, it is important to know what other systems depend on the system that crashed.
Either mechanism would work in most cases. A homogeneous system copy would be necessary if the hardware changes.
Disaster recovery is a big subject and preventing it can cost money. The important thing is to have a very good understanding of the environment at your location and the tools available. There are hardware/solutions from different vendors that can make recoveries easier than others.
