BAPIs vs. IDoc/ALE for SAP-to-SAP interfacing

We're trying to determine if BAPI or IDoc-ALE should be used in a new interface between two SAP clients. The individual transactions (asynchronous is fine) will have high volume and performance is a concern. BAPI is a concern in terms of capacity and stacking up of requests/impacting on-line etc.) Should BAPIs be pursued for a high volume, performance relevant transactions? We typically impliment ALE-IDocs.

ALE/IDocs is the choice if asynchronous communication (i.e. non- real-time processing) is suitable. High volume transfer via BAPI may bring down your system completely as it may jam or dead-lock the update message queue due to high traffic or database lock contention. Please be aware that RFC calls always use dialog session work processes, so sending many RFC calls at the same time will affect performance for dialogue users.
