An SAP SD functional/production support or an SAP Basis career
I have been working in a Jr. Basis administrator/SAP computer operations role for 7 years. I am trying to decide if I should pursue a career in the SD functional/production support role or continue up the SAP Basis ladder. I have taken an SD Configuration class and gained a good understanding of the SD module. Also I have an opportunity for some on the job training within my company's SD team.
Which position is in more demand today? What about in the next 5 years?

When in doubt, I lean towards the functional side of SAP over the technical when it comes to long term career planning. However, there will continue to be good roles on the Basis side also. I guess I am biased because I see IT as being the engine of SAP, but I see the business process expert at the steering wheel, crafting increasingly flexible solutions that meet a company's changing business needs. If you were going to risk everything to get functional SAP skills, I might be more cautious, but you're not, since your company is training you in SD.
I would lean toward the SD side but in your case it is a tough decision given your seniority in Basis. Either option could work out for you. You might want to fall back on the cliché and "go where your heart is."
