Since you are a skilled ABAP developer with knowledge of Java, you have ideal prerequisites for SAP XI. In fact, understanding XI is fairly easy, since it is mainly a middleware mapping engine. The difficulties are mainly when it comes to making custom mappings in high-level Java code or using the adapter engine to interface with external protocols and non XML data formats. It is not too difficult for a good developer. The market for XI is still increasing and there is definitely a shortage of XI developers today.
