Can I execute my own written function from the 'workflow' inbox?

Currently I have the options "execute, display, reserve, replace, forward, resubmit, display_log, attachment."
Or from the screen after 'execute' (where I have "process delete_flag idoc_display").
I guess what you are looking for is some sort of screen exit in the Business Workplace where you can add your own buttons/menus. I am not aware that such an exit exists in 4.6x.
Judging by your description of the 'next' screen, your work item is calling method IDOCAPPL. ERRORPROCESS . This is an SAP delivered method that ultimately calls Function Module EDI_DOCUMENT_STATUS_DISPLAY. I had a quick look and was unable to find any screen exits for you to implement your functionality. You can redefine the IDOCAPPL.ERRORPROCESS on your subtype and subsequently call your own screen, but my guess is this would introduce more headaches than it would solve.
